Hospital Care

During your upcoming hospital stay, your physician may be a hospitalist from the Connecticut Multispecialty Group. This special practice of medicine is one of the newest concepts in health care in the United States. It has been practiced for over ten years in Canada and Great Britain and is now available to patients at Hartford Hospital. A hospitalist is a specialist who takes care of people while they are in the hospital. They are board-certified internal medicine specialists who have additional expertise in hospital-based medicine. The hospitalists are available for the duration of your stay at Hartford Hospital twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

The hospitalist works with your primary care physician to coordinate your care. Your primary care physician will be updated via the telephone. A copy of your discharge orders, medication orders, and a summary of your stay will be sent to your personal physician following your discharge. Hospitalists work on a seven-day rotation, so there is a different physician assigned every week. Depending on your length of stay, you may see one or more hospitalists during the course of your care.

More About Hospital Care

As a patient, you will receive prompt attention to your care needs by a physician with special expertise in hospital-based care. The hospitalist will be available and focused on your care without the distraction of an outpatient office practice. In addition, a full-time Advanced Practical Registered Nurse (APRN) will be available to assist in your care and discharge planning. The hospitalist will care for any illness that an internal medicine specialist treats, such as pneumonia, heart disease, emphysema, asthma, gastrointestinal problems, kidney problems, and strokes.

Specialists in the fields of lung disease, cardiology, and surgery, along with other specialty areas will continue to care for any illness that would routinely be in their area of specialty. The specialists and your hospitalist will work together with your primary care physician over your course of treatment. After treatment, you will return to the care of your primary care physician, who will coordinate follow-up care specialists as needed. If you do not have a primary care physician, you have the option to continue your care with the hospitalist or you can request a referral to another physician in your community.
